About FDIC Insurance and How It Protects You

The FDIC is an independent agency of the United States government. They, along with other federal and state regulatory agencies, regularly review all FDIC-insured banks, such as BankUnitedDirect, to ensure standards are met. We offer the same protection you would get from a traditional bank.

How FDIC Works

How does FDIC insurance work?

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is an independent agency of the United States government that protects the funds depositors place in banks up to certain limits should a bank be unable to reimburse its customers. Since the FDIC was first established 1933, no depositor has ever lost a penny of FDIC-insured funds.

FDIC insurance covers all deposit accounts at insured banks and savings associations. That includes funds deposited in checking accounts, savings accounts, money market deposit accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs), up to the insurance limit. Current insurance limits are up to $250,000 per depositor, for money kept at one insured bank. With a combination of accounts, you can maximize your FDIC insurance coverage. The FDIC’s website offers a helpful tool that calculates your FDIC insurance coverage and tips for making sure your money is fully insured.

Note: BankUnitedDirect and BankUnited, N.A. are treated as the same entity for FDIC insurance purposes. This means that if you have deposit accounts at BankUnited, N.A., your BankUnitedDirect deposit accounts are combined and not separately insured for the purposes of calculating insurance limits.
